Overview
The mandate of this division is to foster basic cancer research.
Major area of study is the biology of cancers, which are most
frequent in India, such as, oral cancer, lung cancer, breast
cancer and cervical cancer. The analysis of the role of cell
cycle regulatory genes in the prognostication of oral cancer
has given lot of insights into oral cancer biology. The studies
on MicroRNA expression profile and its relevance to carcinogenesis
with reference to oral cancer is underway. Elucidation of
normal Stem cell and cancer stem cell biology will also be
a major focus in the coming years. The division is also conducting
various studies in familial cancers, in this regard; a familial
cancer registry is being maintained. The role of natural background
radiation in cancer causation, the isolation and characterization
of various plant derived anticancer agents and anticancer
properties of synthetic chemical compounds are also being
evaluated. The division is also conducting studies on the
scientific evaluation of Ayurvedic drugs to improve immune
response in cancer patients.
