Brief overview of current research:

We are working on biological activities of plant polysaccharides. We have isolated three different polysaccharides with immunomodulatory and antiproliferative activities. One of the polysaccharide was found to have a metaphase arresting property like colchicines. Further studies of the mechanism of action of these polysaccharides as anticancer and immunomodulatory agents are progressing and the results obtained are promising. Elucidation of the mechanisms of action of the active principles is highly inevitable in drug development programs for which gene profiling by micro array is an excellent technology and we are planning to incorporate such tools in our future work.

Existing Projects:

  1. Polysaccharides from Tamarindus indica as inhibitors of mitotic progression in malignant cell lines – elucidation of the target protein (Funded by KSCSTE)
  2. Genomic instability in lung cancer as an early cancer prediction tool (Funded by DST)
